Using different frequencies with crystal singing bowls, tingsha chimes and other healing instruments can assist with relaxation, deep sleep and focus.
Beta, Alpha, Theta, & Delta Waves
Brain wave entrainment is an assisted form of meditation using pulses of sound with different frequencies: Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. Entrainment is a process of synchronizing two different beats to become harmonious. Brain wave entrainment works by pulsing a different sound in each ear to stimulate the brain into altered states of consciousness. These two sounds will force the brain to follow along and the brain will mimic one of the 4 frequencies. By modelling one of the different frequencies, you can assist with relaxation, deep sleep and focus.
Calculating the Brain Waves Created with Two Instruments to Determine Frequency
- Download a Spectrum Analyzer on your phone. I use the free app Spectroid for use with my android to determine the hertz of my instruments. I use N-track tuner for my apple device.
- Play each bowl one at a time and write down the first number that has a peak. This first number is the fundamental note of the instrument. The other peaks are the overtones.
- Repeat on a second instrument that has a close pitch.
- Measure the difference between the two numbers.
- Look on the picture guide at the top of the page to see which brain waves your two instruments make when played together
Example of the Spectroid App Screen
This is the reading from a 12" Tibetan Bowl. The fundamental frequency is 114 hertz.
Brain Wave Entrainment and How it Helps you to Meditate

How does Brain Wave Entrainment work?
Consistent, precisely engineered audio frequencies in the form of binaural beats cause the brain’s frequencies to match the stimulus. Your brain perceives two beats with slightly different frequencies (which are inaudible to the ear) through your headphones. It takes the difference between the two, and matches its own frequency to it. This is called the “frequency following” response.
In a sense, it’s is nothing new – just like the beats at a club, ancient civilizations used the hypnotic effects of rhythmic drumming and chanting to elicit a trance-like state. Brain wave entrainment uses frequencies that are the same as the ones naturally produced in the brain during meditation.
Brain wave entrainment is the leader, and the brain is the follower. Or, the DJ and the dancer, the drummer and the trancer (no, these are not Santa’s reindeer…)
Once you’re in meditation with brain wave entrainment, you stay there until the track ends. It’s hard to stay in meditation with traditional practice, but brain wave entrainment does that work for you. You just focus on what you want – to bliss out, relax, do some personal growth work, listen to your mind, whatever is meaningful to you.
Brain wave entrainment helps the brain do what the brain naturally does anyway – to synchronize to an external stimulus. And it gives you a consistent experience every time. No more adding to your stress by trying to get into Alpha and failing… or to stay in Alpha… and failing! You can press PLAY and bliss out anytime you want. https://blog.mindvalley.com/brainwave-entrainment/

Brain Wave Frequencies Explained
The EEG (electroencephalograph) measures brainwaves of different frequencies within the brain. Electrodes are placed on specific sites on the scalp to detect and record the electrical impulses within the brain. A frequency is the number of times a wave repeats itself within a second. It can be compared to the frequencies that you tune into on your radio. If any of these frequencies are deficient, excessive, or difficult to access, our mental performance can suffer. Another Article about Brain Entrainment
Brain wave entrainment is a method to stimulate the brain into entering a specific state by using a pulsing sound, light, or electromagnetic field. The pulses elicit the brain’s ‘frequency following’ response, encouraging the brainwaves to align to the frequency of a given beat. Read more here.
