Who Can Take This Course?

This course is open to both the general public and to students of the School of Sound.  

Students attending must either have some experience on the handpan or attend Saturday's Handpan Basics to register for this class.

Number of Credit Hours for School of Sound Students

This course is worth 5 hours of electives towards School of Sound elective hours.   If you take this course and then decide to join School of Sound at a later date, you will be credited these hours. 

Course Description

This class is an introduction to preparing the sound practitioner for finding and working with opportunities within the allopathic medical field. Based on the instructor’s experience, we will explore possible scenarios in working safely and ethically with individual patients, what could go wrong, introducing our work to the staff, and to corporate medicine at large.  You will learn how to determine the best approach in working with a variety of patient needs, including hospice and support groups.

Course Objectives

    • Understand our limits and scope of practice
    • Apply expected professional standards and ethics
    • Understand HIPAA and confidentiality
    • Be informed of infection control and precautions 
    • Know what documentation, intake forms and consent may be required
    • Know what criteria and credentials may be required of you
    • Understand which instruments might be best for bedside, staff presentation or public event 
    •  Determine where to find acceptable, peer-reviewed,  evidence-based research and other resources.
